How Start/Stop Systems Work
Back in 1983, Volkswagen introduced the first production start/stop system with the Polo Formel E that was sold only in Europe. Fast forward to 2019 and almost every automotive manufacturer has at least one model available with the technology.
What is a Start/Stop System?
The Start/Stop system in automobiles automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and then restarts the engine when the driver's foot comes off the brake or pushes in the clutch. The purpose of the system is to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and is most useful in vehicles that operate in stop and go traffic or have to stop at traffic lights.
In non-hybrid vehicles, there is a gain of 3-10% in fuel economy, according to Edmunds.com. Road & Track Magazine estimates that around 3.9 billion gallons of fuel are wasted every year by idling engines. Billions, with a "B".
What Does This Do to the Battery?
It's no surprise that the Start/Stop system takes a lot out of a battery. The power needed to crank the engine is one of the biggest draws (if not THE biggest) on the vehicle's battery. Automotive manufacturers use AGM batteries mainly, with some adding a lithium battery as an extra component.
AGM batteries become less effective at operating the system as time goes on. The lithium batteries added to some vehicles are used only to start the vehicle. CTEK offers a variety of chargers that can keep you AGM battery working effectively while extending its life. The Time To Go, MXS 5.0, MUS 4.3 Test & Charge, and MUS 7002 are all designed to keep your AGM battery working at its best. If your vehicle has a lithium battery, CTEK has you covered there, too. the Lithium US provides complete LiFePO4 battery care to recover, charge and maintain your lithium battery.
All the CTEK smart chargers are safe to use through spark-free operation and reverse polarity protection. All you have to do is connect your battery and the charger does the rest.
Let CTEK Protect Your Battery and Vehicle
There's no sense in saving money on fuel consumption, only to have to buy a new battery sooner than necessary. CTEK smart chargers can add years to your AGM and lithium battery, providing you with reliable service from your vehicle.
