Why Car Batteries Fail [infographic]

Enough already! The last thing you need to hear is the sound of “click” “click” “click”, only to discover that your battery is dead. A dead battery when you’re on your way to anywhere is a nuisance. There are many reasons why this happens to your battery and a few ways to solve the problem of a failing battery.

The infographic below illustrates and uncovers how important your car battery really is to the overall health and livelihood of your vehicle. It also lists key considerations when choosing between a smart battery charger vs. jumper cables. After reviewing this infographic you’ll never look at your battery the same way.

“Toaster” Battery Chargers…BAD. CTEK Smarter Battery Chargers…Good!

If you drive a car you’ve probably been introduced to battery chargers, but did you know that common “trickle chargers” or “toaster chargers” can cause more harm to your battery than good if used incorrectly.

“A trickle charger works by charging your battery at a rate similar to the rate at which it discharges. However, it is possible to cause damage to your battery by leaving it on the charger for too long. While a trickle charger works at a much slower rate than a regular battery charger, they are not designed to be left on a battery indefinitely. Depending on how depleted your battery’s charge is, you may need to leave it on the trickle charger for a few hours or for a day or two. It is important to monitor the battery while it is on the charger and remove it immediately upon receiving a full charge. Otherwise, the battery could be ruined or even catch fire.” – eHow

With a CTEK Smarter Battery Charger the issue of overcharging your battery is much less likely because of CTEK’s smart technology.  A CTEK Smarter Battery Charger monitors whether or not your battery needs more charging.  The charger can be left on as long as you like becuase it knows when to give your battery more juice and when not to.  Also, the desulphation function, that each CTEK Smarter Battery Charger comes equipped with, can extend the life of your current battery 2-3 times that of its normal life because it reconditions.

So the choice is yours.  You could sit around and wait for your battery to charge and make sure to take off your “trickle charger” or “toaster charger” so you don’t damage your battery and so it doesn’t catch fire, or you could use a CTEK Smarter Battery Charger and set it and forget it.

I’m in BIG trouble!!

“Ok so I was 15 years old and it was New Years Eve I had stayed out all night with some friends and my boyfriend. Of course my parents knew nothing about the party or the boyfriend being with me. So I get a call early the next day from a friend telling me I better get home that my parents found out where I was and are extremely mad!! So Im a little scared now, I call home and try to (lie) my way out of it, but my dad was not buying it. He told me I had 30 min. to get home or he was coming after me.

So we jump up, clear across town and all pile up in the car to take me home. Uh Oh the car wont start. No way!! We get a jump after 30 min. of searching and head to the nearest Kmart to get a battery, Needless to say It took 2 hours to get the battery, replace it with the old one and get me home. My dad comes running out of the house ready to whoop some You know what!! I was grounded for 6 months!!! Unreal. Wow those were the times.”

Mom To The Rescue: Stranded on Thanksgiving

As part of CTEK’s Smarter Battery Charger Dead Battery Story Contest we are highlighting several of the stories that were submitted over the last few months. Stranded on Thanksgiving

“This past Thanksgiving, after spending the day with family, I stopped by the mall to price check some items for Christmas. When I saw that it was closed I pulled out my laptop to log onto the wi-fi connection instead of going straight home. I decided to talk on my phone while I browsed the internet and was too preoccupied to notice that I had left the keys in the ignition and my headlights were still on. By the time I was ready to leave my battery had died and I couldn’t start the car.

I tried calling for help but my phone battery died and when I opened my laptop to email a message for help my laptop battery died as well! I had to sneak into the mall (it was closed by now) and plug in my laptop to get a charge so I could go back online and post a help message on facebook and send a quick email to my Mom’s cell phone telling her I had no communication and was stranded. It sounds easy enough but there was no wi-fi in the mall so I had to wait a couple of hours while my laptop charged before going back to my car to use it. Not to mention that it was freezing cold.

I decided to wait in the mall as long as I could since it was warm inside and because if I got caught and had to leave, I’d rather leave on a full laptop battery than a semi charged battery. I didn’t know how long it would take for help to arrive and the fuller battery sounded better at the time. I spent most of the night stranded in a freezing mall parking lot with a dead car battery, a dead phone and a dead laptop.

To top it all off, in the beginning of this ordeal, I had texted a friend that my car wasn’t starting and my phone was dying so I texted him my location in case I wasn’t able to call for help. He suggested I take my keys out of the ignition and sit and wait for a half hour then try to restart my car. The problem was that after the half hour was up, my car wouldn’t start and my phone was dead. He lived locally but never came to help me. I stayed stranded until my Mom finally looked at her phone after leaving a friend’s house and saw my help messages. Thank goodness my Mom didn’t go home and go straight to bed or she might not have gotten my messages until the next morning. My Mom is my superhero!!”

The holidays can sometimes be stressful and getting stranded in the cold at the mall doesn’t help.

A Battery Charger Could Save a Life: My Dad on his 80th Birthday-Pacemaker and All

My Dad on his 80th Birthday-Pacemaker and All

“Recently My dad and I were on our way to Victoria to get his Batteries changed on his pacemaker. We stopped just outside of Merrit and when we came back out to the jeep, the battery was dead.

It was not a good situation as we had to make the Ferry before the rush hour. Needless to say, my dad was very stressed and restless and we did miss the Ferry, Making older people wait or when your plans change is not good for seniors, A CTEK Battery Charger would of solved all my problems. I have some issues with my battery at this time. At the end of the day we did get there and I was happy to say my dad survived the trip, it was hard on my nerves though waiting that extra time at the ferry.”

This is a serious story. Glad everyone was safe in the end.

Scary Stories Are Fun…Kinda: A Car Full of Screaming Girls!

As part of CTEK’s Smarter Battery Charger Dead Battery Story Contest we are highlighting several of the stories that were submitted over the last few months. Come back and visit our blog to read other great stories and check out our Facebook page to join our community and learn of other contests and events.

A Car Full of Screaming Girls!

“When I was about 12 I had a sleepover at my house. Since it was near Halloween we decided to tell ghost stories and scare ourselves silly. My mom had a story to tell us but since it was “true” and happened locally she would drive us there and tell us the story when we got there.

This really appealed to us so we happily got into the car, giggling nervously. She drove us into the country near the entrance to an old cemetery where it was REALLY dark. She told us this awesome scary story and got us all scared half to death so we begged to leave.

Then she realized leaving the headlights on was a problem and now she had a car of girls crying and screaming and wanting to go home. Back then very few people had cell phones to call for help (and yeah, that makes me old, lol). So we had to walk the couple miles back to town in the dark and with all the girls crying. It’s funny now but it wasn’t then and I’ve always remembered the importance of a good car battery!”

Yeah, we are scared too.

This Just In: A Dead Battery and a Baby on the Way!

A Dead Battery and a Baby on the Way!

“As always things seem to fall apart right when you need them to work right. I got a call about 30 minutes into my work shift that my wife needed me home. My wife was over 9 months pregnant and ready to deliver at any moment. I rushed home and in my excitement did not close the car door all the way. Our car was old and probably needed a new battery anyways. after deciding that my wife was in labor and arranging a babysitter and waiting for contractions to be right we headed down to the car.

When I noticed the door open my heart jumped out of my chest. I tried to start the car but it would not turn over. My greatest fear at that moment was that my wife would have a baby in our drive way. Luckily a nieghbor was just getting home and saved my skin by giving us a jump. we got to the hospital and a few hours later had a beautiful baby girl in our arms.”

A dead battery during one of life’s great moments, that’s stressful!
